Display Screen Equipment Training

There are few people who as part of their daily work are not required to use display screens of one type or another. Our courses are aimed at those who use such equipment for significant periods of time (more than 1 hour per day) in the workplace as well as those responsible for the upkeep and assessment of the DSE itself.

While computer monitors might be the most typical example of DSE they are not the only one. We are also talking about laptops, tablets, televisions, smartphones, CNC control pads, portable diagnostic screens or equipment containing cathode ray tubes, or CRTs. All of these pieces of equipment can be operated in ways that reduce the risks associated with misuse. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations make it clear that both employers and employees have certain responsibilities covering DSE safety.

Our courses listed below will fulfil all training obligations and provide invaluable awareness of how best to set up and operate DSE, covering ergonomic solutions and reducing the risk of chronic work-related injuries.

Face Fit Testing

The health of your employees could be at serious risk if their RPE does not fit correctly. Face fit testing is also a legal requirement for anyone who wears a tight (or close) fitting mask for work.

It is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE masks will fit everyone so CIKU Training Services can test your workforce to ensure RPE masks are suitably properly fitted.

CIKU Training Services provide a fixed price face fit test service onsite or at our training centre. We test whether the mask fits the persons shape and size. Face fit testing should be carried out at mask selection stage.

Depending on the level of risk you may choose to test every year, two years or three years. Faces can change shape so regular testing is advisory.

For further details and booking to arrange your Face Fit testing please speak to CIKU Training Services.

As ever, our online course provides a cost and time effective way for employers to fulfil their legal duty and rest well in the knowledge that their employees are well versed in risk awareness and mitigation.

Manual Handling Training

One of CIKU Training’s most popular courses.

The failure to ensure correct manual handling practice is one of the commonest causes of injuries in the workplace. It is also one of the prime reasons that back injuries are inundating the NHS and resulting in loss of staff to innumerable sick days. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations have been introduced to try to stem this tide. These guidelines set out requirements for employers and employees alike. The crux of the regulations is that employees need to be trained in manual handling best practice, including how to use any equipment provided for handling loads.

UKATA Asbestos Awareness Course

Course Overview

Ciku Training Services is a licenced provider of UKATA Asbestos Awareness Training courses.

The role of UKATA (UK Asbestos Training Association) is to set standards, audit and manage the list of asbestos training providers. UKATA training is the industry standard for all those working in trades that could potentially come into contact with asbestos.

Why attend?

If your employees have any possibility of coming into contact with asbestos then you as their employer have a legal requirement to provide asbestos awareness training for them (Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 – CAR 12).

The purpose of asbestos awareness training is to make them aware of the potential dangers and the procedures they must follow if they are working in proximity to asbestos containing materials (ACM’s).

Asbestos is a high risk material that is linked to the cancer mesothelioma, among other conditions, and around 4000 deaths per year. Due to the time taken between exposure and symptoms presenting, many of these relate to historical contact before regulations were tightened. These regulations, and the legal requirement to undertake asbestos awareness training, are what will help to prevent future deaths and chronic disease and that is why they are so important.

Those most at risk to asbestos exposure include, but are not limited to:

• General maintenance workers
• Electricians
• Plumbers
• Joiners and Carpenter
• Painters and decorators
• Plasterers
• Construction workers
• Roofers
• Shop fitters
• Gas fitters
• Heating and ventilation engineers
• Demolition workers
• Telecommunication engineers
• Fire/burglar alarm installers
• Computer installers
• Architects
• Building surveyors

You will be required to attend all five days of the course in order to be awarded the qualification. During the 5-day training delegates will need to show understanding of the main elements and pass the core exercises. At the end of the training you will be required to sit a final examination, passing the exam will mean you qualify for the certificate which is then valid for five years.

Why is asbestos still a risk?

Now we know about the dangers of asbestos it is no longer used. However, a domestic or commercial property built or renovated before 2000 could potentially contain asbestos in a range of materials including pipe insulation, sprayed coatings, soffit boards, textured coatings and fuse boxes. It is therefore vital that anyone with the potential to come into contact with these materials undertake UKATA asbestos awareness training so that they understand the risks and know the necessary procedures to follow.

Working at Height Training

Anyone who is working in conditions that mean it is essential to be working on structures, including platforms or machinery above ground where any fall could result in personal injury is considered to be ‘working at height.’ The risk of working at height is not just the fact that you may fall, but that equipment being used could fall and pose a threat to those beneath.

CIKU Training will ensure that health and safety legislation which covers Working at Height Regulations, 2005 is adhered to. The legal obligation falls on employers and employees to assess, control and minimise risks and hazards that may result from working at height. Our training course covers the dangers of working at height, the regulations, the hierarchy of controls, assessing risk and much more, resulting in a comprehensive understanding of best practice.

Working Safely Training

It is in the best interest of all concerned, from employers to employees that everyone is working safely. Most of the legal requirements are on behalf of the employer but Health and Safety law (which we are concerned with here) actually places some of the onus on the employee. Working safely is important not only legally, but morally and financially. Being responsible for nasty injuries is not something anyone wants and it can leave a firm out of pocket.

It is the expectation of all of us that we can go home at the end of a hard day at work without having been the victim of injury. The problem is that many workers are being injured as a result of poor practice and knowledge of safe systems of work.

While this appears a rather broad field, we do in fact provide a focused and dedicated course to ensure that we all work safely and effectively and are able to recognize a plethora of commonplace hazards and risks. It will help improve safety performance while encouraging environmental best practice. This training is forming a major part of a change in the attitude towards risks in the workplace.
